I remember reading this book years ago. It was the first step in a reading journey of 3-4 more of her books. As lives go, we could not have more different experiences but I think a little of Anne Lamott lives in each of us. This is why she touches us so deeply. Love her or hate her, she always elicited a reaction.

You live in one of my all time favorite parts of the world…has been way to long since I have walked Stinson Beach and all these beautiful spots along Hwy 1.

I use a Lumix DMC FZ20..and love it. Mine died and it was impossible to fix so I found one on eBay. One day when this one dies I may try a newer Lumix model.

When I lived in Texas I missed the snow so much. I missed the changing seasons altogether. It’s not something I would want to do again. While the snow may make day-to-day things more difficult or occasionally dangerous, it also makes the world magical. Winter must have snow. :0)

Love the little chick-a-dee. Must admit, I don’t recall ever seeing one like that. I love its sassy little crest. The ag students at the lake at my old work site used to make up peanut butter and seed pinecone feeders for the birds. I thought they would be fun to make. Thanks for the reminder.

What a fascinating series of shots from the celebration. They do a Day of the Dead parade here in Albuquerque’s South Valley, but I always miss it due to some commitment. It’s interesting to see some of the traditions.

He was an incredible artist. I’d never heard the Hercules story. I wonder if, during his (subsequently nonexistent) childhood, he ever wished he hadn’t shown that drawing. Parents should support and nurture, not give in to jealousy and competition. How sad. Judging solely by these photos, it looks as though he tried to be a much better parent than his own father was.

Jacque – I was so interested in learning of how long it takes to actually complete one of these works. Fortuante are the individuals who can actually purchase the originals.

The limited run details were also of interest. Do you take it to a commercial printer and supervise the printing yourself?

How I wish you would/could submit for a show here in Turlock. The Carnegie Art Center has recently reopened after a long rebuilding process from an arson fire five years ago. They are current showing an Ansel Adams show of rarely shown photographs.

I love the drawing of the piano and the caption is great. I always enjoy your posts. I have been reading your blog in my feed reader and keep meaning to pop over and comment but I forget to. Your diary collages are so cool in the next post.

To answer your questions, I have recently got a new camera. My old one died and I really couldn’t afford a new one but my generous sister got me a much better one than I used to have. I do get on the floor to photograph the birds. I have a french door in my bedroom leading out to the deck. I sit or kneel on the floor in the hall and zoom in for the shots through the door windows. I have to be careful because even that far back if the birds sense me there, they fly off but I have gotten pretty good at staying still enough.

Rachel/Mary – thanks so much for agreeing to play along! It did turn out to be a time consumer; but I found it to be very much like a jigsaw puzzle. I found that altering it was very freeing; to break through that boundary that says “don’t make a mistake”. I think the areas that are altered turn out to be more creative then the initial paintings do. Like in Mary’s PBN we bring a bit of ourselves into the piece. I enjoyed the process both times and hope to do another – either as a group or alone. Can’t you imagine a collection on your wall of these? Plus I understand people collect them on ebay if you ever want to sell yours! Looking forward to Paradise when I get it; sounds to be very much like mine – a happy place.

I LOVED DOING THIS PBN Exchange! I have never tried a PBN before and was intrigued by the time and effort it took to complete mine. Of course I am a writer, not a painter, so even a PBN was a real challenge for me. I was a little intimidated by the little paint pots that arrived with the canvas . . . so like everything else in my life, I jumped the tracks and did my own thing . . . I “painted” my PBN with colored Sharpies. The only paint on mine is a little white wash on the horizon. I hope you enjoy “Paradise” when it arrives! Rachel

I have to say–the one thing that makes me want a large, even frivilous house is the prospect of a library and garden. Here in Albuquerque, each year they do a Parade of Homes. People with multi-million dollar homes allow visitors to walk through and admire (usually they are trying to sell the houses). I am not impressed by the decadent display of worldly goods–but I must admit I linger in their libraries and gardens. It seems so nice to have an almost sacred space set aside for knowledge and nature.

High ascender, I love this idea. How fun!

When I was a kid, my parents would put out a paint-by-number on the coffee table for family parties and get togethers. My crazy Italian Aunts and Uncles would be painting while drinking their martinis and smoking their ciggies. I still think it’s too funny that they got so into it but actually everyone did.

Hi, thanks for your nice comment on my own IF piece. Um, not sure about your Paint By Number project. I haven’t done altered media since art school, and I haven’t done a PBN since young childhood…and even then I only did one and found it boring. Still, it’s always good to try new things…I have to go the art store in the next few days and I’ll see if I can find a PBN that sparks my imagination. Sounds like it could be fun!

I actually know a couple that live on a stream, you must cross a bridge to get to the front door and sometimes water laps so very near their bedroom window!

I used to do shows long ago and now only do studio shows so I don’t have any tips for you. I do like the idea of the cloths line and enjoy how your prints look when you have displayed them that way here.

Another gorgeous post and the idea of children’s books sounds good to me. I have written 5 stories for a picture book series myself and haven’t sent them around yet. Maybe one day. I find that the commercial part of art/writing is difficult.

Hi Lynn; thanks for stopping by and taking a look. I taught myself how to do this. I think the key is having several sized pen tips. I used the Kon-i-nor pens. I like this post as it shows how versatile your range of expression is. I had never heard of this technique before and how interesting. I have a vintage book on “Automatic Writing” and to my surprise the topic is popular again.

Ascender, firstly if I haven’t already told you, your name “scatterlings” is ingenious! Secondly, I also love creating collages but do so in a different way. Seeing yours are TREMENDOUSLY inspiring. Vibrant, full of texture and whimsy. Delightful. What fun to keep finding “more” each time I look at these.
I use my artwork in healing classes and will be highlighting your approach as a fine example!

This is a really cool technique. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Very innovative. I also like your “Beholder” piece below. The colors and apparent simplicity of the piece are very compelling, asking you to linger and reflect on deeper meanings.

Sometimes I think all art should have explanations and causes and messages. Of course then there is the art that makes me weep and I don’t even know why and it has no message but that happens about once every 10 years. So hooray for good stuff with background. Thanks for displaying your work.

I am so glad you did the close ups! I would have completely missed all the little scatterlings scattered everywhere (I love the girl)(oh yes, and the very yellow butterfly)(and the tiny shell and turtle!)(ok – all of it). Lovely – and so evocative. One can get lost in this! (or wander away purposefully and stay a while)

I’m particularly drawn to the pen and ink of the girl with such a burden of fiber. She looks satified, not overburdened.

I like references to Mary Wollstonecraft who exhibited such a strong sense of self in her own life. And Mary Shelley, her daughter, who also managed to be as intellectually and creatively independent.

Just a little note; that hand is putting on face paint on the little boy. I thought about doing the paint in just red but then he would look like a clown and I did not want to ‘go there’… though clowns are almost as creepy as devils…

There’s something kind of sinister about this drawing! The child looks like he’s hissing at that hand…and what is that hand doing? It’s intriguing for sure! Your technique is fabulous…I really admire your pointilism pieces.

Heehee, loved this! It reminded me how my kids get so into character come halloween and how its almost impossible to get their face paint on and pull them together once they are in costume.

Hi again! I was so inspired of your beautiful image, so I’ve made an pointillism image too.

I must admit, that I’ve made it with a socalled “selected script” in Paint Shop Pro, and then finished the image. So, it’s not so “art’istish”, but I like the result, and I think it matches “Spotted” well too.

Your technique is superb! I really admire the patience and finesse you have to achieve such a wonderfully subtle composition. It has an almost ancient look – like a statue that has weathered over time. The ribs make me feel sad…this child looks very helpless. Well done!

Hi Jacquelyn,

I am responding here to your inquiry regarding building canvases from my blog as your email included was a no reply!

Anyway, It really doesnt take much equipment at all for the price you save, expecially if you do larger canvases that are gallery wrapped type. You would need a miter saw which I got for $40 at home depot. A long table of whatever kind as the wood you would use would be either 2×3 or 2×4 or 2×2 but they come in 8′ lengths. I got an electric saw work bench thing for $80. Then you just need a hammer, nails a staple gun and your canvas cloth which I purchase by the yard at JoAnns fabric. I think that is it really. You would need about a 2 foot deep x 8 foot long space to set up too.

It really wasnt very expensive but my arm muscles hurt
