It is snowing and death bugs me
as stubborn as insomnia.
The fierce bubbles of chalk,
the little white lesions
settle on the street outside.

Oh. by Anne Sexton

From the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts… its 27th year. More than 300 talented artisans, from painters and watercolorists to masters of photography, ceramics and jewelry, artists-in-action, musical entertainment on three separate stages and live street corner concerts.

One exciting aspect of the festival (and my personal favorite!) is the always-popular Italian Street Painting, presented by KDFC benefiting Palo Alto Partners in Education (PiE). As audiences watch, more than 70 street artists use vivid chalk pastels to create impressive works of art – ON STREET SQUARES measuring up to 12′ x 12′. Nearby, the new Open Aire Gallery displays conventional paintings by a select number of street artists to assist fundraising efforts for PiE.

thanks…sorry for delay in reply i’ve been away

  • I love that painting at the top, Is that done with chalks!! ?

  • That looks like a wonderful street art festival. I love the way you captured the spirit of it in these photographs.

  • Wonderful paintings, I love pavement art…

  • wow is this cool!! i know this sounds dorky, but I always loved the scene in mary poppins where burt is drawing on the sidewalk squares….and then they jump in!!! TFS!

  • Alison; thanks for all that you do. I just checked… I could have sworn art blogging link on my front page. I had some wordpress issues a few months ago and some things disappeared as I was messing with the layout of my blog. Good to have you back on my list!

Carver; it was hot hot hot out so I did not take the amount of photos that I usually do.

Crafty green; there were many many more; they are very delightful. I like the pavement crack through that top one

jean, i dont recall that scene – I am going to need to grab some popcorn and watch it again

  • Oh, my addicted heart would burst!!! Look at all those chalks and all that wonderful art–talk about lessons lost to erasers–those artworks lost to rain and wind! OH, indeed!

  • daydreamer; thanks – I too can’t imagine putting that much work into something and leaving it under someone’s feet. Palo Alto always has such wonderful chalk work. always so sad to see them pack up their chalk and walk away (which reminds me – I did see some neighbors kids who were drawing on the sidewalks and wanted to return to see what they had left.
